What is guniting?

Guniting, also known as dry-mix shotcrete, is a versatile and efficient construction technique used in various applications. It involves the application of dry mixtures of cement, sand, and aggregates through a high-velocity stream of compressed air onto surfaces, creating a dense and durable layer. The mix proportion typically consists of cement, sand, and small-sized aggregates, with the addition of water at the nozzle just before application

Properties of guniting

• For guniting a good amount of cement is used, which increases durability, and also, small size aggregate is used.
• A high-speed jet impinging on the surface caused guniting to solidify, which helps to bring various air-void systems and increase the amount of cement. This whole process also impacts the durability of guniting.
• In comparison to mixing proportions, these techniques have a massive impact on in-place qualities of shotcrete properties.

How is Guniting done?

· Guniting is done using a simple machine made for the purpose. The machine has mainly five parts namely, a dry compressor, a water supply pressure tank, a cement gun, a water pipe, and a nozzle.

· The process begins by adding a dry mixture of cement and sand to the machine under compressed pressure and high velocity

· Water is added to the nozzle and then a mixture is prepared using this dry mixture and water

· This mixture is mixed using the cement gun and the pressure is under the control of the operator

· During the application, the dry mix stored in the cement gun is injected and water is applied to the nozzle. Afterward, the mixture is sprayed over the surface under high pressure and velocity

Why is Guniting done?

Guniting is done preferably to stabilise the surface structurally sloppy. A trained professional uses a cement gun to spray mortar on the surface applying pneumatic pressure, which results in creating strong concrete. Here are some common uses of Guniting:

• It is helpful to protect the rock surface that has been recently excavated
• Guniting helps to add a protective layer to curved or folded portions, canals, reservoirs, and tunnel lining
• It helps in preventing corrosion in oil tanks, coal bunkers, and steel building frames
• Guniting is a common practice used in the water retention system, and swimming pools, among others
